The gaping and cavernous void was forced shut by tombstones clattering together with great aplomb. The resulting noises echoed around the bowels of the room and silence fell once more. That was a particularly satisfying yawn, thought Maximus to himself. Technically vampires rarely got tired but he found that the process of stretching his jaws that way and making silly noises helped focus the mind on sleep for the day.
Maximus always got a touch depressed around the wee hours. His impending coffin weighed heavily on his mind as he cursed the fact that he couldn’t sleep through the night and enjoy the sunshine like everyone else. Of course, his idealistic imagining of England being glazed in perpetual sunlight filled mornings and amber dappled evenings was somewhat off the mark, but as he only had old films to go on he liked to keep the dream alive. He was halfway through reading a battered old copy of War and Peace and was just getting to the bit where someone’s twentieth cousin turned out to be the heir to a kingdom no one had ever heard of. He had read it a number of times before and had constantly surprised people whenever he mentioned this to them. He usually didn’t care to tell them about the fact that he would likely live for one thousand years. When he managed to find polite conversation, he found that talk like that tended to put people off.
The door to the room exploded. Not literally, to be clear, but certainly metaphorically. Less Hiroshima more old car back firing, but there was certainly an almighty bang. He casually raised his head to see his sister crossing the floor in a manner that could only be described as flouncing. It was a specialty of Cheratina’s and while it grated on her brother he couldn’t help but be impressed by the effort she put into the art. Her dress was a little dishevelled and if he wasn’t very much mistaken there was a slightly mucky handprint on her breast. Unsurprising really, they were bound to get in the way sometimes.
“Good evening sister of mine, how was your outing?” His eyes scanned behind her into the corridor hastily. “And more to the point, where is your brother?”
“Humans are horrendous little creatures brother. Absolutely impossible to please, especially when they have been drinking. I honestly don’t know what is wrong with them.” She flopped into the chair opposite Max and lit up a cigarette taking a deep drag on the stick before expelling the smoke into ribbons of curls above her head. “I practically threw myself at one of them but he just ran off to the toilet. You wouldn’t get that kind of cowardice in the old days let me tell you.” Her brother’s face was impassive to this.
“Cheratina. I almost certainly remember telling you not to play with the locals. In fact no, I am sure of it. I definitely told you not to play with the locals. By which of course I meant, well, not to play with the locals.
